The largest portion of our traffic is marked as “Unknown” in “Media”:
I assume that most of this traffic must be direct and referring websites. Is it possible to distinguish these Media sources between “Direct” and “Referral” Traffic.

Sources, Media, and Campaigns are derived from UTM parameters, so they are usually unknown unless you attach them to a link: UTM Generator for Campaign Tracking – Pirsch Analytics
If most traffic comes from external sources where you cannot control the link, it will show up in the referrers list, but not in the UTM panels.
